    Footprint and pitch

Measure the footprint including the overhangs (eaves and rakes).

How to Calculate Roof Area and Roofing Squares

You can estimate a roof from the ground. Measure the building's footprint including the overhangs, then use the roof pitch to convert that flat area into the real, sloped surface area. Divide by 100 to get roofing squares, the unit shingles and roofing labor are priced in.

    Worked Example: a 40 × 30 ft Gable Roof

A house measuring 40 × 30 ft including overhangs, with a 6/12 pitch, 10% waste and shingles at 3 bundles per square:

    40 × 30 ft footprint, 6/12 pitch
    Footprint: 40 × 301,200 sq ft
    Roof area: 1,200 × 1.1181,342 sq ft
    Add 10% waste1,476 sq ft
    Squares: 1,476 ÷ 10014.76 squares
    Bundles: 14.76 × 3, rounded up45 bundles

Starter strip, hip and ridge caps are often bought separately, by the linear foot of eave, hip and ridge. Check your shingle manufacturer's coverage for those accessories.

    Waste Allowance by Roof Type

    • Simple gable roof: about 10%.
    • Hip roof: about 15%, because every hip needs cut shingles.
    • Complex roofs with valleys, dormers and multiple planes: 15–20% or more.

Roofs with several sections at different pitches are best calculated section by section, then added together.

From Squares to a Profitable Roofing Quote

Shingles are only part of a roofing estimate. A quote that makes money also covers tear-off and disposal, underlayment, flashing, drip edge, vents, labor per square, equipment, overhead and profit:

    Frequently Asked Questions

Measure the length and width of the house including the overhangs, and multiply them to get the footprint. Multiply the footprint by the pitch multiplier for your roof's slope (1.118 for a 6/12 pitch) to get the actual roof surface area.
A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface. Shingles, underlayment and roofing labor are usually priced per square. A 1,500 sq ft roof is 15 squares.
Most architectural and 3-tab asphalt shingles come 3 bundles to a square. Some heavier premium shingles need 4 or 5 bundles per square. Check the coverage printed on the bundle wrapper.
About 10% is a common allowance for a simple gable roof. Hip roofs, valleys, dormers and other cut-up roofs often need 15% or more, because more shingles are cut and lost at each hip and valley.
The pitch multiplier converts a flat footprint into sloped roof area. It equals the square root of 1 plus (rise ÷ 12) squared. A 4/12 roof is about 1.054, a 6/12 roof about 1.118, and a 12/12 roof about 1.414.
